Svetlana Mladenovic - Distant Dream

January 28, 2021 by Alexa Fahlman
“In a world of inhumane reality, it is the only humane sanctuary left. That is a dream.”
— Paprika (2006) dir. Satoshi Kon

This time last year, photographer Svetlana Mladenovic was fulfilling her childhood dream of wandering around Japan. However, since then, the world has collapsed into a stasis, and amid these strange days life stands still and Mladenovic finds herself caught in transitory moments of reality and dream. She’s left to ponder upon the future of travel and whether she’ll be able to explore the world freely again. For now, Mladenovic curbs her wanderlust by allowing herself to dream because, as she echoes Satoshi Kon, “in dreams there are no boundaries, and no restrictions.”
