Federica Nannini - Assenze silenziose (Silent Absences)
In the contemporary world, hyperconnectivity seems to be the element that connects every individual. Yet, despite this apparent closeness, many young people live in a condition of emotional loneliness.
“Silent Absences” is a photographic project that explores this paradox through the representation of the classrooms of a high school—places once filled with voices, laughter, and conversation, but now immersed in a silence that seems to tell more than a thousand words.
The photographs focus on empty spaces, objects left scattered across desks, abandoned books, broken pencils, and slightly displaced chairs, as if someone had just passed through but was no longer there. Each image is a snapshot that suggests the presence of young people without ever showing them directly. Details such as an earbud resting on a desk, a forgotten water bottle, or the reflection of light passing through a closed window become symbols of an interaction that, unfortunately, is more superficial than profound.
The project aims to encourage reflection on the inner emptiness that many young people experience, despite being constantly connected to one another through technological devices. The school, a place of growth and learning, appears as a bare environment where traces of human presence can only be measured through objects, rather than through genuine interaction and authentic relationships.
“Silent Absences” does not simply portray a physical emptiness; it seeks to evoke a deeper feeling: that of a generation which, despite having access to an infinite number of channels and means of communication, often finds itself trapped in a loneliness that is difficult to express in words. Each photograph is an echo of that invisible distance, of a connection that fails to fulfil the need for emotional closeness and genuine exchange.
The images are not merely a testimony to absence, but an invitation to reflect on the lives of young people today and on the challenges they face in trying to find a balance between the virtual nature of their relationships and the search for sincere, genuine human connection.
