Marie-Lilien Funk - The Sweet Escape
Marie-Lilien Funk works as a creative director, content producer, and photographer in Berlin. Her photographs–a market vendor resting her head in a moment of exhaustion, a voyeuristic glimpse into a restaurant’s kitchen, the shadowy silhouette of a plants’ leaves–weave seemingly fleeting moments into larger narratives. In her photographic practice, Marie-Lilien plays with the tension between the rawness of contemporary urban life and the delicate imperfection of reality. Her observant and satirical gaze draws attention to the subtle details within everyday surroundings that we’ve become accustomed to overlook. Guided by an inner curiosity of the beauty within the ordinary, Marie-Lilien’s photographs can be understood as an interplay between a certain poetic fragility and a loud, colourful aesthetic of vibrant urban life.
An excerpt by Marie-Lilien Funk on her series, The Sweet Escape:
We are all so tempted by that summer dream, when the cold winter air is sneaking in through every crack it can find. Fatigue, lack of motivation, nights in, darkness outside. When we find ourselves in the middle of our winter scares, we want to escape. The dream of that warm sunray touching our face, that dream of salty hair, of walking barefoot, walking around in a t-shirt at midnight. Juicy fruits, fruity flowers, that blue of the pool, that blue of the sea. All those little sensations that summer makes us crave, is what I try to capture in this series. It's an homage to letting go, feeling yourself and the joy of living. It's the roadmap to your imagination, helping you to escape into that paradise called 'Summer dreams'. Sweet, sweet summer dreams!
