Christina Yang - People from Tibet

Christina Yang is a photographer and art director based between Shanghai and Melbourne. Her interest in photography was first spurred when she was given a camera at 12 years old. Now, specializing in fashion photography and portraiture, Christina uses photography as a tool to translate her visualizations of the beauty found in both fashion and human beings. Her aesthetics, driven by ‘90s and ‘00s nostalgia–often marked by saturated colours and bold prints–revere both contemporary China and traditional Chinese opera.

Her series People from Tibet, however, is stripped of the theatrics. At the end of 2020, Christina took a road trip to Tibet and photographed the people she met along the way. As a fashion photographer, she was instantly drawn to their colourful garments and cultural jewellery. Here, Christina seeks to represent the beauty of people from Tibet and her joy in having been welcomed into experiencing and capturing another culture.
